The treatment is often applied to the face, neck, and hands in order to improve the skin’s quality and create a fresher, revitalised appearance. Medical peels deeply exfoliate the skin, removing the surface build-up of oils, bacteria, as well as dead skin cells. They also restore nutrients and moisture to the skin.

There are different types of medical peels, and what suits someone else may not be best for you. Dr Jeremy Richardson will help you decide on the best treatment, based on your skin needs and desired outcomes.

What Are the Benefits?

Depending on which peel treatment you choose to treat your concerns, medical peels come with a variety of great benefits. The treatment removes the surface layer of dead cells and oils, thus revealing a layer of fresh, healthy skin underneath. The peels contain naturally derived, active ingredients that stimulate the healing systems in your skin and produce a brighter and more youthful appearance. Medical peels can achieve benefits such as:

  • Increase your cell turnover rate
  • Smoothen and firm the skin
  • Clear congestion and refine pores
  • Exfoliate, nourish, and hydrate the skin
  • Increase the production of collagen (fibres that keep the skin strong and flexible)
  • Resurface your healthy skin, creating a brighter appearance

Although some people seek medical peels to simply refresh and exfoliate their skin, the treatment can also improve a multitude of skin concerns. For example, commonly treated issues include:

  • Acne scars and scars from injury
  • Sun damage
  • Pigmentation, such as freckles and age spots
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Tired under-eye area
  • Dry or oily skin

Types of Medical Peels

Dr Richardson will tailor the treatment to suit your skin, health, and ideals so that you can achieve a pleasing result. There are many types of medical peels that we can generally divide into three categories:

  • Light Peels – These are designed to target only the outermost layer of skin. They are milder than other types of peels, suitable for almost any skin type, and typically require little to no downtime.
  • Medium Depth Peels – Medium peels penetrate slightly deeper into the skin and are able to treat several concerns such as sun damage and signs of ageing.
  • Deep Peels – These are the strongest type of skin peels. People who have already experienced a medium depth peel and wish for a stronger treatment may be candidates for a deep skin peel treatment.

What to Expect

On the day of your treatment, your hair will be tied back and Dr Richardson will cleanse and prepare your skin. In the case of a light peel, you shouldn’t need any anaesthetic to have a comfortable experience. However, if you are having deep peel treatment, you may need some numbing.

Dr Richardson will apply the medical grade peel solution and leave it for a period of time in order to allow the ingredients to absorb. He will then remove the peel and apply a moisturiser to your skin. You will then be able to go home. The total treatment takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Aftercare and Risks

Since there are many types of medical peels, aftercare and recovery times can vary. Milder peels generally do not require any downtime, which means you can return to work and other activities straight away. However, stronger peels may lead to some redness, swelling, and skin flaking. You should take care of your skin during this process and follow Dr Richardson’s instructions to help your skin heal quickly.

Although medical peels are clinically tested and proven treatments, there is still the risk of side effects. This can include things such as ongoing redness, scarring, and infection. Taking care of your skin after treatment will help you avoid any complications. Most patients can generally expect:

  • Side effects such as redness, swelling, and tightness for one to two days
  • Dryness and flaking, which should subside after three to four days
  • After mild peels, you may return to work straight away
  • After strong peels, return to strenuous work and exercise after one to two weeks
