For many women, this can be an issue when wearing certain clothing. However, modern techniques allow surgeons to reduce the size of the nipples and help women feel more confident.

Nipple reduction surgery aims to correct the size and projection of the nipples in order to achieve better proportions. Since every patient has different requirements, Dr Jeremy Richardson will tailor the surgery to your body and ideal results.

What is Nipple Reduction?

Overly large nipples can create a lack of confidence and self-image issues. They can also cause discomfort and chaffing due to rubbing against clothes.

Nipple reduction, sometimes called nipple reshaping, is a cosmetic procedure designed to address these issues. It can address both the length and width of the nipple to create a more visually pleasing and comfortable shape. Although most surgeries simply reduce the size of the nipple, we can also reshape the areolae (the circles of skin around the nipples). The procedure also:

  • Corrects large, long, or misshapen nipples
  • Addresses both nipple projection and width
  • Reduces enlarged areolae
  • Creates visible, lasting results

The surgery can be combined with other procedures such as breast lift and breast reduction, depending on the patient’s needs.

What to Expect During Your Consultation

Before your procedure, we will need to have a personal meeting with you in order to discuss your health and reasons for seeking surgery. After taking your medical history, we will outline your options and develop a surgical plan suited to your needs and goals. During this meeting, you should raise any health issues or current medications with Dr Richardson.

Ideal patients for breast reduction are generally women who are healthy, non-smokers, and who are concerned about large or protruding nipples. However, nipple reduction is not advised for women who want to breastfeed in the future. If you are interested in the procedure, a meeting with Dr Richardson will help you decide if this option is right for your body. You are welcome to ask any questions or raise any concerns so that you can make an informed decision.

The Procedure

The exact techniques during nipple reduction depend on the nipple shape and size as well as the patient’s desired outcomes. You can discuss which technique is right for your body during your consultation. This procedure can be performed under a local or general anaesthetic. The most suitable type of anaesthetic for you will be discussed at your consultation.

The surgery takes around one to two hours to complete.

During the procedure, Dr Richardson will shorten the nipple, and if needed, reduce the width. This may involve making small incisions in or around the nipple in order to access and remove the underlying tissue. Your incisions will then be closed with sutures, leaving you with a smaller, more proportionate nipple shape.

Cost of Nipple Reduction

If you are thinking about having nipple reduction, you will need to consider the fees involved. Since every surgery is different, fees are outlined on a personal basis according to the patient’s specific needs. For example, we will consider the length and extent of the procedure as well as the anaesthetist fees, hospital fees, and related aftercare costs. If you have further questions about fees, we will be happy to discuss them during a private meeting with you.

After the surgery, you may have some pain and soreness, but these symptoms should subside as your body heals. We can help ease any discomfort with pain relief. In addition, we will send you home with guidance on how to care for your body during recovery. This may include getting plenty of rest, keeping a healthy diet, and reducing your activity.

Although most patients recover from their nipple reduction within a couple of weeks, aftercare is still an important factor. Patients should avoid heavy lifting and exercise. You should also avoid putting pressure on your operated sites until they have fully healed. Taking good care of your incisions will aid in producing a good result.

Generally, nipple reduction patients can expect:

  • Some swelling and tenderness for a few days
  • Return to work after one to two days
  • Resume your normal exercise routine after two weeks

Risks and Complications

While nipple reduction is a fairly simple and low-risk procedure, every surgery has some risks. You should be aware of these risks to ensure you are making an educated decision. The risks involved with this procedure include:

  • Infection or bleeding
  • Tenderness
  • Poor healing
  • Loss of pigment
  • Numbness
  • Scarring
  • Breastfeeding issues
  • Unwanted results
  • Further surgery

Since your nipples will be more tender than usual after surgery, is vital to follow your at-home care advice. This will help your nipples heal well and reduce your risks. You should consult Dr Richardson if you notice any lasting or severe issues during the healing process.
