A neck lift is a surgical procedure designed to lift and tighten the skin around the neck, reducing lines and wrinkles. It is often combined with a facelift to address a broader area.

What is a Neck Lift?

Age-related issues around the neck are common for both men and women. The skin gradually loses collagen and elastin, fibres that keep the skin firm and flexible. A neck lift addresses this by surgically removing excess skin. As the name suggests, the procedure lifts and reduces the neck skin.

Depending on the patient and their personal goals, the surgery can address the skin, underlying fat tissue, and muscle. A neck lift can also reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

What to Expect During Your Consultation

Suitable candidates are generally over the age of 40 and are non-smokers, as smoking can make you more prone to healing issues. They should also have realistic expectations as well as a positive outlook. During your consultation, we will discuss these factors in conjunction with your medical history and reasons for seeking surgery. After this, we will be able to develop a customised surgical plan.

The Procedure

The procedure can take two or three hours to complete, depending on the methods used and how much skin needs to be removed. It is performed under general anaesthesia, which means patients will be asleep during their surgery.

There are a number of surgical techniques for neck lifts. Generally, Dr Richardson makes small incisions under the chin and behind or in front of each ear. Through these incisions, the muscles are tightened and fixed in place with strong internal sutures. Any excess tissue is pulled and removed to eliminate skin folds and wrinkles. We can also combine the procedure with liposuction to reduce any fat deposits. Finally, Dr Richardson closes the incisions.

Cost of a Neck Lift

Due to the personalised nature of surgeries, fees can vary from patient to patient. When outlining the fees for neck lift surgery, we will need to consider a number of factors. These include anaesthetist fees, hospital fees, and other aftercare-related costs, such as medication. If you have other questions about the cost of neck lift surgery, we can provide further information during your consultation.

Aftercare

After the procedure, you should expect to have some swelling and bruising. We can help you manage any discomfort with pain medication. Additionally, we will provide instructions on how to care for your incisions at home, which you should follow carefully. For example, you may need to:

  • Wear a support garment to help reduce swelling
  • Sleep on your back, with your upper body propped up
  • Take prescribed medications
  • Keep your incisions clean and dry
  • Avoid smoking and alcoholic drinks
  • Reduce your physical activity levels
  • Maintain a balanced diet and drink plenty of water

The bruising and swelling should resolve on their own throughout your recovery. If you notice any issues or lasting side effects, consult Dr Richardson or seek medical care as needed. During recovery, most patients may expect the following timeline:

  • Some mild swelling and pain for one to two days
  • Resume light activities three to five days after surgery.
  • Return to your usual activities and work after two weeks.
  • Do not perform vigorous exercise for six to eight weeks.
  • Wear your support garment for one week or as advised by Dr Richardson.

Like every procedure, neck lift surgery comes with risks. Although complications are rare, it is a good idea to be aware of them so that you can weigh the risks and benefits. Risks of this surgery include:
